is
based on a series of dramatic games and excercises which have been used
in drama groups to build improvisational, language and physical skills
amongst actors. These games are known in theatrical circles as “theatresports”.
The concept most likely originated in Canada or the UK, where theatrical and comedy groups used these games to teach concepts such as “blocking”, “status” and “pushing the story forward” to their participants. A valuable tool in teaching new actors to work with groups of two or more, theatresports has become an institution in countries such as Canada and Australia, where drama schools and colleges hold regular heats and finals to determine the annual theatresports winners.
The corporate world has also taken on the spirit of theatresports by incorporating the games into their team-building repertoire, as the games allow the participants a chance to think laterally and beyond the scope of their duties – in other words, to practice being creative.
However, most people know of theatresports through the popular TV programme, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, which showcases the comedic talents of its stars while depending on a loose structure based on theatresports games.
Malaysia has its very own group of theatresports players who have been performing the games regularly for over ten years, with such groups as the Instant Café Theatre and Dramalab, and Vision Works.
is regularly staged for live theatrical performance as well as for corporate events.
